Objection

Claire is fifty-one, a lawyer for twenty-eight years, and the woman who runs every dinner, every contract and every household to the minute. She has a house in Mosman with a view across the bay to Balmoral, a grown-up daughter still living at home, and a husband, Nick, who is building the app all her friends are suddenly talking to at night.

Last November, Claire saw a divorce lawyer. She hasn't told anyone: not Nick, not her daughter, not the four women she has met for Friday drinks for ten years. The lawyer's card is still in her drawer, and she does not know whether she still loves her husband.

Nick is never home on time, and never says where he has been. Her mother is beginning to forget things. And when her daughter asks her, quite simply, “Are you happy, Mum?”, Claire, who has an answer for everything, finds that she doesn't have one.
